Oh Hyuk’s birthday was on October 5th, what did you do? As for clothes, I receive inspiration from street fashion and the aura of Japanese people, and my everyday clothes have acquired the taste of Yohan who helps us with styling. Our music video and the art by Nemonan, who made our album cover for us, are that way as well. In a manner of the lyrics being pessimistic, but the sound not being heavy. Not too uplifting and not too flat, bright but dark. ( VG: If you were to describe that style?) I like being at at boundary. I would like to encompass different art fields as a whole, and I’m of the opinion that the musical degree of completion, of course album covers and music videos even, have to be good as well. Oh Hyuk: I think the mindset that musicians only need to be good at music is strong in Korea. VG: hyukoh is a band that absolutely needs to go over the visual aspects, photography and videography, and fashion. Donggun was saying he’d have another drink as well, and after I took a shower and came back out he was laying down. Inwoo: I think it was extra hard on Hyukie as he was even eating cold medicine.
Hyunje: Poor Hyukie fell asleep before we knew it. Inwoo was going about crying and Hyunje was vomiting…. Inwoo: That was when we properly drank together for the first time. I’ve wanted to do modern art as well, so we decided that he would design a place for high quality audio, and I would set a sound that fits it. Oh Hyuk: It was because of a project by Kim Donghee, who works with film. I heard you performed at the Gwangju Biennale a while back? Hyunje: In terms of the playing, the guitar sound that had been recorded wasn’t something I was familiar with, but if it’s for the music Hyukie’s made and for us making music together in the future, I thought I need to change. Now we need to consult with each other and get along. Oh Hyuk: Because I had made it a habit to do everything on my own it felt like working together was somehow slowing us down in the beginning. Hyunje: Hyukie worked on his own before we met, but after the band was established there were things coming up that we had to discuss internally. I think it suits me well, but I am a little bit bitter about it. Both Hyunje and I majored in guitar, but it was decided that I’ll play bass. Did your opinions ever clash?ĭonggun: A little bit, when we were deciding positions? In the beginning Hyunje joined as a bassist. The band formed after Oh Hyuk completed the debut EP album. ( VG: Where in the world did you purchase that?) From a black lady in Itaewon. Oh Hyuk: Inwoo used to have a long version of a bell-end haircut, but he levelled up when he changed his hairstyle. I was shocked when he told me he was born in ’93. Oh Hyuk: I thought he was the same age as the friend who introduced him to me and was thinking ‘Aha, he looks old for being born in ’91’. Hyunje: I thought Donggun was quite a bit older. What was your first impression of each other? Oh Hyuk: Ah, I need to edit that! We’re not intentionally aiming for an English vibe, though it is true that since I’ve listened to a lot of music from England, that influence naturally shows when I write songs.Īs if plotted out, the four of you are all the same age. I saw online that you said you’re ‘aiming for an English vibe’. Now I’m doing both concurrently.ĭonggun: I was active in another band while doubling as a session guitarist for Han Young Ae, but I liked Hyukie’s songs so much that I quit the previous bands and joined him. Inwoo: I was originally focusing on producing after having played drums, and Hyukie asked me if I couldn’t join him to play drums again. Both the music and Hyukie’s voice was really great. Hyunje: As I was trying out producing on my own after having taken a leave of absence from studying guitar at school I was contacted by Inwoo. What made you decide to join the band with Oh Hyuk? Inwoo said he had a friend with an arts university background who plays guitar well, and having met him we got along well, and it seemed our vibes matched. Inwoo was introduced to me by an acquaintance, and Hyunje was a friend of Inwoo. I got to know Donggun in January this year, thanks to a close friend. Ultimately the band was formed with the current members only after recordings (t/n: of 20) were wrapped up. Oh Hyuk: When I was looking for a band after having worked on my own, I was initially unable to find people with a matching mindset.
